Birthday Party During A Trip

Basically, traveling is a wonderful enrichment for everyone - if it weren't for this stupid homesickness. Your birthday could be particularly difficult in a strange environment far away from friends and family. But don't let your head hang on this great day, but enjoy it to the fullest. There are plenty of ways to celebrate your birthday while you're travelling.

Who of your friends can claim to have celebrated their birthday in Australia, New Zealand, China or America? Probably not very many! To give you some inspiration, we have put together some ideas for you. At the end you will also find tips against homesickness, so that you are perfectly prepared for your big day and can start planning.

Ideas for party lovers

Have you always celebrated your birthday in clubs or bars? Great, because when you're in a bigger city, there's hardly anything stopping you! So grab your travel buddy and make the nightlife unsafe together. But pay attention to your safety, especially in foreign regions, and whether you are allowed to drink alcohol at all . This would also be a perfect way to try a pub crawl. These are mainly known in Europe and are often offered by hostels. Also, keep your eyes peeled for a cool festival nearby – because you could be celebrating your birthday there too.

But don't be sad if you're traveling alone! A lot of hostels have cool people who most likely share your interests. Just talk to them and tell them that you would like to celebrate your birthday. There will certainly be a nice group of people with whom you can enjoy the evening. So you not only have a celebration, but also get to know a lot of new people. That's like a little gift!

Relaxed ideas

Loud music and parties are not your taste? No problem. How about a nice campfire on the beach or another suitable fireplace? Just ask your travel acquaintances and let your birthday evening end nicely. Before doing this, however, find out whether it is permitted to make a fire. Maybe someone has a ukulele or guitar with them - then you can sing around the campfire to your heart's content. Of course, a few snacks and drinks should not be missing! How about a delicious stick bread, for example?

If the weather is bad, a game night in the hostel is also a great idea. There are usually many fun games there anyway, which will create a good mood. Before that, why not bake a cake with your roommates and let the evening end in an enjoyable way.

Of course, you can also use this day all to yourself. Traveling is sometimes a bit exhausting, so you should plan some time for yourself - and not just on your birthday, please! Maybe there is a small wellness oasis nearby. A massage or traditional cupping would certainly do you good too! Such relaxed hours are allowed far too seldom anyway!

Action-packed ideas

Are you always looking for an adrenaline rush? Then your birthday is the perfect occasion to try something new! Whether bungee or skydiving, rafting, paragliding or parasailing - today is the ideal day for it! Especially if you've always wanted to try it.

A somewhat quieter, but still exciting idea is an escape room. These are found in many regions of the world. Take some people from your hostel or other travel acquaintances and fight your way out of the room together. You will definitely experience a lot of fun and excitement! This is how you celebrate your birthday in a different and action-packed way.

Cultural ideas

Maybe you didn't know it yet, but depending on the country and culture, birthdays can be celebrated differently. In order to delve even closer into the customs of a country, this would be the right opportunity to celebrate your birthday in this way. We have selected two examples for you here so that you can better imagine what they mean.

A tradition that you may already be familiar with comes from Latin America. This is also very popular with us. In this country, a so-called  piñata is hung up. This colorful papier-mâché figure is previously filled with delicious sweets and fresh fruit. The goal is to pop them blindfolded and armed with a stick. A song of encouragement is traditionally sung. That would be a fun experience!

If you are in China, you will probably not be served a cake on your birthday, but a tasty noodle soup. The funny thing is that it's just one noodle - but it's particularly long. It stands for the fact that you should enjoy a wonderfully long life. That's why you have to eat them in one gulp. By the way, you would already be a year older in China, because you are already a year old there when you are born.

Ideas with friends and family

If you already know where your journey is taking you, then you can plan ahead. It would be a nice idea if your family or friends could visit you. Note that this has to be arranged really early so that nothing gets in the way. You could experience an exciting holiday week together and spend a lot of time together. This would certainly not harm your travel motivation.

Unfortunately, this is not always feasible. However, that shouldn't be an obstacle to seeing them that day anyway! Organize a small Skype party and invite all your loved ones. Drink a beer or a glass of wine and toast together. These moments will definitely make you happy. But be warned: homesickness could be your undoing.

Tips against homesickness

We want to address the topic of homesickness again and give you a few tips. First of all, these feelings are perfectly normal. You don't have to feel bad about it. It's clear that you miss your loved ones at home from time to time. Besides, being in a foreign country is something else again. You are surrounded by new impressions and long for your own home. You might even be suffering from culture shock  .

This is the case for many and you are clearly not alone. If you address the topic openly, many will certainly tell you about their experiences. And as the old saying goes, a sorrow shared is a sorrow halved. Your interlocutors will certainly have a lot of understanding for you. Especially when you celebrate your birthday for the first time far away from home.

If it is particularly intense for you, please do not hide in your bed and just worry about it. This will certainly not get you out of your vicious circle. Quite the contrary: You will only rack your brains over it even more. What helps against this is distraction!

That's why you should definitely do something. It's your birthday after all! Go beyond yourself and talk to people in the hostel - you won't regret it. Celebrate with them, laugh and exchange ideas with others. So your birthday will be great - and you will quickly forget the homesickness.

Conclusion

As you can see, there are many ways to celebrate your birthday while traveling. It all depends on your type. Are you more of a party goer? Then hit the bars and clubs of the city with your new friends. If you're looking for something a little more cosy, maybe a game night at the hostel would be a great idea. As an action lover, you will definitely get your money's worth with a parachute jump. If you are interested in the culture, dive into the birthday customs of different countries! Depending on the possibility, your friends or family can also come and visit you. What great ideas - and no two are the same!

It is important that you have something to do on this beautiful day. Otherwise you might get homesick. That's why we recommend that you treat yourself to something special on your birthday or meet new people. That way, homesickness doesn't have a chance to spoil your mood. However, if you're feeling those feelings, that's perfectly fine — as long as you don't hold on to them all day and try to make the best of your situation. So have fun and enjoy your birthday during your trip!
